Do you bake items at Carriage House?
Yes!! We bake and cook about 95% of the sweet and savory items that you find at Carriage House Bakery. While we have some local vendors who bring in their specialties on a regular basis, most of what you will find on our shelves is made on site in our small but mighty kitchen by our talented bakers and cooks.
Are things fresh?
Everything you see in our store was taken from the oven less than 48 hours before you buy it. Freshness is VERY important to and and we do everything we can to keep it that way. We bake and cook in small batches. Because of that we know that things will sell quickly and we replenish every single day.
Do you publish a menu?
Our website has the sweet and savory items that we routinely carry. Because we want to vary our products to maintain the interest of our "regular" customers, the best way to learn about what we have from week to week is to sign up for our email newsletter. We send this generally once a week to over 1800 subscribers. It will keep you up to date on menu items, specials, and seasonal varieties.
What should I do if I want a quantity of something?
The best way to guarantee that we will have more than 6 of one items is to all ahead. We can either reserve what we have in stock for you, or--if you give us 48 hours advance notice--we will make it specially for you.
How do I place a special order?
If you want to order anything for a special occasion or event, you can go to our website and order online. We provide secure payment options for you and you don't need to worry about calling while you are busy or at work. If you would prefer to call us, we ask that you do so during business hours. Again, we require a minimum of 48 hours advance notice if you want us to make something for you. If your order is over $30.00, we require that you "hold" the order with a credit card.
How do I order from one of your vendors?
Since we have a number of different vendors, there are a variety of ways to place special orders. The best thing to do is to call Carriage House and we will be happy to direct you to the appropriate vendor(s) and familiarize you with their procedures. All orders placed with our vendors will be delivered to Carriage House for payment and pick up.
Every time I stop at Carriage House to buy bread, you are "out" of the kind I want. What do I do?
Whether you are buying bread baked here at Carriage House or bread that comes from Breadsmith Bakery, you are taking your chances if you come late in the day. We encourage people to call ahead and we will be happy to reserve your favorite loaf of bread for you. That way it will be here when you come after work or from a distance. We do NOT reserve bread during the holidays, particularly the day before a holiday like Thanksgiving Christmas or Easter. On those days it is "first come first served" even if you are one of our closest friends.
You have a "No Return" policy. What if I buy something and don't like it when I take it home?
We have a no return policy since we cannot accept food back once it has left our store. We sample most of our products routinely and, if you are not sure of something, you can always ask for a taste and we will try to accommodate your request. If you purchase an item that is not up to our standards, please notify us and we will do our best to "make it right".
Your prices are higher than some of the grocery stores, especially the bakery items. Why is that?
Sometimes our prices are higher and sometimes they are not. However, all of our items are fresh made with quality ingredients. We use locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible. If you have shopped the stores lately, you are well aware that food costs have gone up, especially dairy products such as butter and cheese. For that reason, we closely watch our costs and save when we can. However, we are a specialty retail bakery and our costs will always be higher than grocery stores or large discount bakeries such as COSTCO. We keep our prices as low as we can and don't "price high" just to offer discounts and specials.
What do you do with unsold items?
Because we closely monitor our baking quantities, we have very little left over. When we have a large quantity of baked goods, we donate them to Community Resources Services of Avon/Avon Lake.
